Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion during his team’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, marking another head injury for the 26-year-old, who has a history of concussions.
The injury occurred in the third quarter when Tagovailoa scrambled for a first down and took a hit to the head from Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Tagovailoa stayed on the ground at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens before being attended to by trainers. He eventually walked off the field under his own power and was replaced by backup quarterback Skylar Thompson. The Dolphins later confirmed Tagovailoa was ruled out with a concussion.
Tagovailoa, who suffered multiple concussions during the 2022 season, previously expressed concerns about his head injuries, even considering retirement at one point in 2023. After Thursday’s game, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Tua was in “good spirits” but expressed concern when he saw him go down.
“It’s more about getting a proper evaluation tomorrow and taking it one day at a time,” McDaniel said, adding that it’s too soon to decide whether Tagovailoa will be placed on injured reserve. The coach also praised Tagovailoa’s leadership, as the quarterback spent time connecting with his teammates in the locker room despite the injury.
Before exiting the game, Tagovailoa struggled, throwing three interceptions. The Dolphins will evaluate his condition further before making any decisions about his return.
